Check security updates and whether the device still meets your needs. A marketing upgrade cycle is not a reason by itself to replace a useful phone.
Ask about repair before replacement.
Get a qualified assessment and written quote for a battery, screen or charging issue. Compare repair cost, expected supported life and parts availability. Do not attempt a damaged battery repair yourself.
Protect your information.
Back up data, sign out, remove activation and account locks, remove your SIM and memory card, and follow the manufacturer’s secure erase/reset instructions. Factory reset may not satisfy corporate data-destruction policies; ask about certified erasure and chain-of-custody records.
Match the device to an actual need.
Check condition, security support, network compatibility and recipient choice. Contact an established donation program before bringing equipment. Include usable chargers if requested.
Recycle responsibly at end of life.
Use a recognized electronics program and confirm accepted items. Do not put electronics or batteries in general waste or curbside recycling. Ask your local hazardous-waste service about swollen or damaged batteries; do not mail them.
Repair first. Donate devices someone can actually use. Recycle what has reached the end of its life.
Official program pages checked November 4, 2026. Independent resources, not Ecodemy partners. Availability, fees and accepted devices can change; contact the program before travelling. This is a starting list, not a complete Canadian directory.
